Brazilian Canadian artist JER blends northeast Brazilian rhythms, psychedelic grooves, and late 60s Tropicalia influences to challenge and redefine traditional Brazilian music.

JER

A two-time JUNO nominated multi-instrumentalist/producer, spoken-word poet, arts educator and community worker. in 2021, he was chosen as the laureate of the 2020 Ontario Arts Foundation Arts Educator Award.

Blending the essence of psychedelic rock, dub, and afrobeat grooves with northeast Brazilian rhythms and the Tropicalia influences of the 70s, emerges Jerusa Leão, the Brazilian Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known as JER. Her music creates an eclectic soundscape that defies conventional notions of traditional Brazilian music.

Hailing from Conceição do Coité in Northeastern Brazil, JER has graced the stages of prestigious events including Lulaworld, MIxto Toronto Jazz, and Calgary Folk festivals. Currently, she’s crafting her debut full-length album as a follow-up to her single ‘Broken,’ released under the Lulaworld label in December 2022.

Backed by May Saxophone, Andrew Pacheco on bass, João Leão on keys, and Dhaivat Jani on drums, JER transcends musical borders, drawing from the rich backgrounds of Canadian, Japanese, Brazilian, and Indian cultures.
