A leading ambassador of contemporary Gipsy culture in Hungary, Romano Drom’s distinctive musical style propelled them to resounding success, establishing them as a highly sought-after world music band with Gipsy heritage.

Romano Drom Band, founded by father and son Antal Kovács Sr. and Antal Kovács Jr. after leaving Ando Drom, has been thriving for seventeen years. They perform in the original Vlach Gipsy language with modern scoring, merging ancient traditions with Catalan rumba, Arabic, and Balkan pop rhythms. This unique fusion music is composed by Antal Kovács Jr.

Since its establishment in 1999, Romano Drom has traveled the world, from Cairo to New York, South Korea to London, Peking to Oslo, touring in the Middle- and Far East and playing across Europe. Their aim is to introduce Vlach Gipsy music, dance, and culture to new audiences through accessible arrangements on their albums.

The band has released six albums, including a genre-unique remix album. Their 2014 release, “COLORS,” incorporates brass instruments and electronic elements. Romano Drom’s music showcases Antal Kovács Jr.’s compositions and the artistry of band members, including the rhythm and dance talents of Krisztián Kovács, Máté Kovács as a contemporary drummer, world-famous contrabassist János Egri, and József Balogh “Jocó,” who brings an authentic sound to complete the band’s big city inspirations.

“Romano Drom’s efforts last night earned them a standing ovation, and rightly so. It really was a unique musical event.”

Louis McConnell, Belfast Telegraph
“Certainly unusual for a Hungarian album, and none the worse for that, there’s a complete absence of brass and violin, giving an intimacy to the music that’s often enchanting. But its heart and soul is in the singing. If you need an analogy, try the Gipsy Kings, but with much more rooted soul, and far stronger vocal work. Real progress on this disc, and a band well worth hearing.”
