STRAVINSKY Three movements from Petrushka
The first half of this program has to do with the
passing of time. The
two Bach-Busoni chorales are indicative of early
morning music, to
stimulate the mind and awaken the soul. Debussy's
Prelude to the
Afternoon of a Faun lushly portrays a faun in a
succession of mid-afternoon scenes. Ravel's Gaspard de
la nuit is a triptych that evokes
the fantastic dreams and fleeting thoughts we
experience at night.
A new piece by Brian Current deals with the
manipulation of time -
slanted time.
The second half of the program is all about music and
theatre. The Weymouth piece is a theatrical dialogue
between man and machine. The Puccini opera
transcription is grand and exuberant, using themes
from the beloved opera. Petrushka is based on
Stravinsky's own ballet of the same name. Overall, my
programme tonight contains a large number of
transcriptions. I view these transcriptions as pieces
in their own right that emerge from the shadows of the
originals, drawing from the uniquely colourful
resources of the piano.
